CAUSE Roundtable Discussion | November 7, 2018
The China-Africa-US trilateral relationship is complex and dynamic involving a variety of stakeholders across a number of sectors. With the recent Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in mind, there is much to discuss regarding China’s engagement on the African continent, especially in regard to economic development, capacity building, cultural exchanges and the five additional initiatives outlined during the forum as focus areas for China’s future investment.
To further discuss these developments, the CIUS Center welcomed 13 China-Africa relations experts, practitioners and student researchers for the 2018 CAUSE Roundtable Discussion, the third discussion in the CAUSE (China, Africa, United States Engagement) Discussion Series. Moderated by Toochi Ngwangwa, Legal Officer at the International Senior Lawyers Project, expert participants included:
- Kwaku Nuamah, Professorial Lecturer in International Peace and Conflict Resolution, American University
- Ambassador Robin Renee Sanders, Former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Congo and Nigeria, CEO FEEEEDS Advocacy Initiative
- Ambassador David Shinn, Former U.S. Ambassador to Burkina Faso and Ethiopia and Professor at George Washington University
During the discussion, participants shared their thoughts and research findings on China and America’s economic investments in Africa, the future of U.S. foreign policy, peace and security in the region, and the importance of cultivating cultural exchange opportunities between both Chinese and Africans. The opportunity to bring guests from a variety of backgrounds to the table created an open dialogue with a multi-sector focus, allowing participants to both gain and share important insights.
