Teaching Chinese Sign Language and Culture

On Thursday, March 30th 2017, the Confucius Institute U.S. Center will welcome Dr. Zheng Xuan and Dr. Kathy Johnson for a presentation on engaging people with disabilities in Chinese language education. Dr. Zheng Xuan is the first deaf person to receive a PhD in linguistics from a Chinese university. She  currently serves as an instructor for the Metro Deaf School in Minnesota, the first and only Confucius Classroom that is promoting the teaching and learning of Chinese Sign Language for deaf students. Dr. Xuan will be joined by Dr. Kathy Johnson, director of the Confucius Institute at St. Cloud State University and advocate for deaf education and the inclusion of people with disabilities in Chinese language education. Both presenters will share their experiences on delivering Chinese language classes through the Confucius Institute, and their efforts to engage students who are deaf in developing global competencies for engaging the world as global citizens and future leaders.

The event is open to the public and will begin at 7pm following a light reception to begin at 6:30pm. Interested attendees are encouraged to RSVP through Eventbrite.
